Super station, Krypton Radio takes off with Airtime
We discovered Krypton Radio when they posted about their switch to Airtime in the Sourcefabric forum. We were thrilled to find out what they were doing, and wanted to know more.
Krypton Radio focuses on adventure movie and TV soundtracks, featuring new talent from the world of science fiction fandom, comic books and anime. The station offers original programming, news on internet culture and radio serials. With a unique content mix and a legion of dedicated fans (their site gets between 50,000 and 75,000 visitors a month), we had to find out how they got on to Airtime.
Background
Krypton Radio was founded in 2009 by Hollywood special effects pro Gene Turnbow, and friends who had grown up inspired by comic books, superheroes, sci-fi and fantasy. They were looking to celebrate their love for the incredible music that has been produced by these ever-growing fandoms. Their ambitions resulted in the founding of Krypton Radio, the only radio station dedicated to this fan base.
Since the beginning
Based in Los Angeles, California, Krypton Radio was eager to tell us more about their background with Airtime. "We originally found Airtime when it was still called Campcaster, but at the time it didn't have enough features to support the way we needed to run our station." That was quite a while ago, but we certainly appreciate their dedication to Sourcefabric's mission to create open source tools and technology. And of course, Airtime has come a long way since the days of Campcaster.
Features they love
Right now they are up and running with Airtime which they told us, "runs our radio stream around the clock, except when our DJ's take over the airwaves." They also gave us an insight into what functionality they love in the software. "Our DJ's and producers enjoy the intuitive drag and drop scheduling interface, and we're very strongly in favor of its open source nature." They believe this fosters a vibrant community around the software, and have found that people are very happy to share their discoveries and modifications to Airtime.
The team behind Airtime couldn't have been more pleased. And of course we are equally happy to find out about such fun and innovative programming that uses Sourcefabric tools. Another feature they like is the easy scheduling with Airtime. "Every show, starts exactly on the dot - no guesswork, no fudge factor, as there is with many other systems." This reliability has helped them build a loyal listening audience.
Special requests
Krypton Radio has some special requests of their own. "We are hoping to see some powerful auto-DJ features make it into the next release, along with more reporting tools." We can promise the Airtime team will be working towards some great new features. Our latest release Airtime 2.5 tackled a new reporting feature, Playout History. You can find out more details about this customisable Playout History and take it for a spin on our Airtime demo site.
