Mobile Radio BSP brings the world of radio to 30th São Paulo Bienal
One of the perks of working with Sourcefabric is that you're exposed to some really great projects. One of the more interesting projects would have to be Mobile Radio BSP, which is produced by Knut Aufermann and Sarah Washington.
They've put together an art radio station that's currently broadcasting until December 9, 2012. It started on September 3rd and was initiated for the 30th São Paulo Art Bienal. As invited artists to the Bienal, Mobile Radio sought to broadcast various radio artists from all over the world.
Sharing the stage with the world
By working in this way, Mobile Radio BSP becomes a showcase for radio artists from around the world. The idea was to share these talents with the community in São Paulo. They are currently working with the international radio art network, Radia, to showcase European, North American and Australian radio artists. With such a wide array of voices contributing to this channel, Mobile Radio BSP aims to "create a dynamic platform from which experiments in radio can flourish."
Live broadcast 24/7
They broadcast experimental radio shows of a wide variety 24/7 live from the Bienal. While it's all live broadcast, Airtime is predominantly used for automation. Knut Aufermann was already familiar with Airtime from working closely with Resonance FM and to be sure that this project would be a success they wanted to make sure there were no hiccups in the programming. As Airtime is designed for automation it offers a secure back up for the content Knut and Sarah are producing. They are passing their live broadcast through Airtime so that in the event of a broadcast interruption, Airtime will make sure there isn't any dead air.
The roots of Mobile Radio
Mobile Radio was established as a travelling project to build upon their work across Europe in the fields of radio and sound art. They have specialized in short-lived radio stations in temporary homes. These events have mostly included media and art festivals, conferences and universities as venues. Their unique standpoint to radio remains today as it was when it started in 2005, to take radio out of the studio environment and into the world.
